Retirement Process

Establishment-I (Estt.1) initiates retirement case 6 months before superannuation. During that period i.e. from initiation of retirement case and superannuation, faculty submits the retirement forms (available on ERP) to the Estt.-I Section and thereafter, Estt.-I forwards the case to Audit for vetting and final notifications (i.e. PPO, GPF withdrawal, Gratuity and Leave encashment, etc.) there on.

  • The Government orders issued from time to time in respect of Pension rules/benefits for the Central Govt. employees be adopted by the Institute for its employees. Further the orders issued/notified by the Govt. of India regarding revised pension payable and commutation of pension to the pensioners of the Institute who had retired before 1986, 1996 and from 1996 be adopted mutatis-mutandis at the Institute as and when a communication to this effect is received from the Government of India.
  • Pending formal amendments to the relevant provisions of Schedule “D” and “F”, the Government orders (reproduced below) contained in Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of P&ARs O.M. No. 28(15)/83-Pen dated 28th July 1983 be made applicable to the Institute employees, effective from the date from which it has been made applicable to the Central Government employees. “In calculating the length of qualifying service for the purpose of pension, a fraction of a year equal to three months and above shall be treated as a completed one-half year and reckoned as qualifying service for determining the amount of pension”.
  • A military pensioner employed at the Institute would be eligible for the grant of gratuity for the service rendered by him at the Institute after his discharge/retirement from the defence service upto his normal retirement at the age of 60 under the Statute.
  • Addition of 5 years in qualifying service be given in terms of para 4 (xxi) of Schedule “D” to the Institute Statutes to specified categories of academic staff for the purpose of grant of superannuation pension as per the following rules:
    • The post should require postgraduate, research or specialist qualifications or experience in scientific, technological or professional field.
    • The post is such that candidates of more than 25 years of age are normally recruited.
    • That the concession is not admissible unless actual qualifying service of an officer at the time he quits Institute service is not less than 10 years.
    • So far as the qualifications and experience are concerned, they will be as per those prescribed at the time of recruitment of the person concerned.
    • The rules may be applicable to all members of the academic staff who retire from service or post after 31.3.1960.

Seniority Rules In general, the seniority rules of the Govt. of India are applicable. The BOG has, however, decided the following: The seniority list is maintained on-line based on the initial date of joining a particular post in the institute.

Procedure for Re-employment of the faculty at the Institute

The following policy be followed at the Institute for re-employment of Faculty and Scientific/Design staff after superannuation:

  • On attaining the age of superannuation, re-employment of all academic staff members whose services are required in the interest of students for the purposes of teaching and guiding research scholars till the end of the academic session i.e. 30th June will be decided by the Director, IIT Delhi in consultation with the Dean (Faculty) and Heads of the Department / Centre concerned.
  • Re-employment of academic staff below the rank of Associate Professor and equivalent beyond the end of academic session be normally not considered.
  • Statutes 13(2) of the Institute provides that where it becomes necessary to reemploy any such member beyond the end of the semester or academic session as the case may be, the Board may with the previous approval of the Visitor, re-employ any such member for a period up to three years in the first instance and up to two years thereafter and in no case exceeding the end of the academic session in which he/she attains the age of 70 years. In no circumstances such member shall be re-employed for any purposes other than those of teaching and guiding the research scholars.

(Vide MHRD letter F.No.1-26/2010-TS. I dated 9.10.2015 from Director (IITs), it has been informed that MHRD will not consider any proposal for re-employment of faculty of IITs beyond the age of 65 years except in cases where re-employment is essential for running the newly set up IITs. It has also been advised that the Institutes may utilize the services of retired faculty members as Visiting/Adjunct Faculty, in the interests of teaching and research.)
